Nebraska guard Sam Haiby to miss 2022-23 season due to injury
Haiby helped lead the Huskers to the 2022 NCAA tournament
Sam Haiby, a key cog to Nebraska’s 2022 run to the NCAA tournament, will miss the 2022-23 season because of a leg injury, head coach Amy Williams announced Friday.

“We are obviously disappointed that Sammi will not be on the court with us this season,” Williams said in a statement, “but she remains a critical member of our team. We will continue to lean on her for leadership and guidance.”
During last year’s 24-win season, Nebraska’s highest win total since 2013-14, Haiby averaged 11 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. Perhaps slightly overshadowed by the performances of Jaz Shelley, Alexis Markowski and Isabelle Bourne, Haiby provided a veteran presence to an otherwise relatively young roster.
She graduated from Nebraska in May and planned to use her extra year of eligibility this coming season. Haiby has played in 117 games for the Cornhuskers over the last four years. She is the only player in Nebraska women’s basketball history to reach 1,000 points (1,381), 500 rebounds (532) and 400 assists (414). Haiby was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team after the 2020-21 season and to the All-Big Ten Honorable Mention Team this past year.
In addition to Haiby’s absence, the Huskers also lost Ashley Scoggin from last season’s roster. Scoggin transferred to UNLV after averaging 8.4 points over 25 minutes per game last season. Williams will now have to rely even more heavily on Shelley, Markowski and Bourne to repeat the success they had in Lincoln.
After earning an 8-seed in the 2022 tournament, Nebraska dropped its opening game against Gonzaga, 68-55. Haiby led the team with 20 points and added six rebounds and three steals in her NCAA tournament debut. This was Nebraska’s second NCAA tournament appearance under Williams, but just the first in four years.
The Huskers open up their 2022-23 regular season on Nov. 7 against Omaha and their Big Ten season on Dec. 4 against Maryland.
