South Carolina adds multiple transfers, including elite scorer Ta'Niya Latson

They include MiLaysia Fulwiley going from South Carolina to LSU and Ta’Niya Latson going from Florida State to South Carolina.

Fulwiley, a 5’10 guard from Columbia, South Carolina, was the Gamecocks’ second-leading scorer last season as a sophomore despite coming off the bench. She averaged 11.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals in 18.9 minutes per game. At times, Fulwiley made big, often highlight-reel plays, but other times, head coach Dawn Staley resorted to benching her.
Adler describes what she expects LSU to look like next season with Fulwiley in the fold:
“We’re basically taking last year’s hoopers all the way down at LSU and just turning it up. We now have no impactful frontcourt talent — sorry [to ECU transfer forward] Amiya Joyner — and we’re just putting in basically, ‘All right, stand there, do some rebounds, cut. Meanwhile, the guards are just going to wreak havoc for 40 minutes.’ It’s going to be fun.”

Meanwhile, the 5’8 Latson led Division I in scoring as a junior at Florida State last season, averaging 25.2 points per game on 45.1% shooting from the field and 34.3% from 3-point range. She also averaged 4.6 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.2 steals in 30.1 minutes per game and was a consensus All-American.
Shafer explains how Latson fits in at South Carolina, given the players the Gamecocks lost and another transfer portal addition:
“Latson is a fun fit at South Carolina. They’re graduating Bree Hall. MiLaysia Fulwiley enters the transfer portal. She kind of slots into the leading scorer role at the guard position in a really fun way. This is not really an archetype that we’ve seen. It’s kind of what Fulwiley was doing, but more consistent. …
“South Carolina also added Madina Okot from Mississippi State, who is 6’6, moves really well, can kind of put the ball on the floor a little bit and does a whole lot of fun things. And I’m excited to see what possibly two seasons under Dawn Staley looks like for her. That could be a really fun basketball fit as well.”
