Kentucky women’s basketball coach Matthew Mitchell is recovering from brain surgery, Kentucky.com has reported.

According to Evan Crane, a spokesperson for the team, Mitchell suffered a concussion in March and believed he’d recovered.

“However, two weeks ago after experiencing a mild but persistent headache for an extended period of time, he sought medical attention,” Crane said. “A subdural hematoma was discovered and he had successful surgery and is extremely appreciative of the excellent care he received at UK Chandler Hospital. He expects to recover fully.”

Mitchell, 49, became UK’s head coach in April of 2007. He is a two-time SEC Coach of the Year (2010, 2012). Prayer messages for the coach are going out all over social media.

The Kentucky Wildcats were tied for third place in the standings (22-8 overall; 10-6 conference play) before all collegiate athletics were cancelled as the Coronavirus pandemic spread throughout the nation.
